Rick G. Spalenka ASLA - Licensed Landscape Architect
Rick has been designing
landscapes for over 30 years. Rick graduated from the University of Wisconsin - Madison in 1977 with a degree
in Landscape Architecture and was commissioned as an ROTC Army Corps of Engineer Officer and served as a landscape
architect with US Army Europe assigned to the Post Engineers in Garmisch, W. Germany. Rick was involved in the design
and construction of travel campgrounds, garrison landscape plantings and designed the entry garden to the Russian
Institute in Garmisch.
Rick owned a design/build,
ground maintenance, garden center, nursery and greenhouse business (Rainbow Gardens) in
Virginia Beach, Virginia for 15 years before moving to Western Colorado. Rick received a City of Virginia Beach
award for his design and community involvement with the city's demonstration waterwise garden constructed in one of Virginia
Beach's largest city parks.
Rick attended Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Virginia receiving
a graduate degree in Urban Studies. He received his Landscape Architect license in Virginia in 1995.
Rick recently
received his Colorado Landscape Architect License (#501) responding to the new 2008 State law requiring landscape
architects to be licensed. Rick has a BS in nursing and practiced as a RN in-patient psych care with sensitivity
to psych needs. Rick trained in therapeutic garden design and horticulture therapy from the Denver Botanical
Gardens and is certified in therapeutic garden design through the Chicago Botanic Garden. His crown jewel
project is the Edgar Cayce Meditation Garden at the Association for Research and Enlightenment (A.R.E.) center in Virginia
Beach.
